Roth IRA 5-Year Rule After 59.5: Yes, and No!

Two 5-year Rule concerning Roth IRA:

Rule #1: The Roth Account Rule (Still Applies!)
The crucial point? Reaching age 59 and a half does NOT make this 5-year waiting period disappear. If you opened your first Roth IRA at age 58, you’d still need to wait until you’re 63 to take out earnings tax-free.

Rule #2: The Roth Conversion Rule (No Longer Applies After 59.5!)
Each Roth conversion (moving pre-tax money from a Traditional IRA or 401(k) to a Roth IRA) has its own individual 5-year clock. This rule is designed to prevent people from avoiding the 10% early withdrawal penalty by immediately converting and then withdrawing.

However, once you hit age 59 and a half, this 5-year waiting period for a Roth conversion is essentially waived. If you converted funds at age 57, you no longer have to wait until age 62 to access that converted amount penalty-free; you can access it as soon as you turn 59 and a half!
